Coherent training needs in MR imaging techniques and in-vivo use of labelled cells in animals requested
ENCITE conducted a survey among more than 350 experts and peers to identify training needs in the field of cell imaging and tracking and to show what would be of benefit for different target groups in this research work. The survey identified four training needs considered to be most important:
1. MR imaging techniques
2. Image processing techniques
3. Optical imaging techniques
4. In-vivo use of labelled cells in animals (animal handling and surgical techniques)
In addition, it has become evident that there is a strong need for interdisciplinary training. Experts in imaging or other disciplines related to the ENCITE subjects need a basic training in related areas that are not the core focus of their professional activities (e.g. optical imaging and molecular biology, etc.).
Based on these results, the ENCITE consortium will focus on the development of such specific training activities and the next public ENCITE educational workshop in 2011!

ENCITE - A peek into the future of novel MR imaging reporter probes
The ENCITE consortium has the ambitious mission to develop and test new MR imaging methods and biomarkers to draw a more comprehensive picture of cell fate and the reaction of the immune system. In the end cell therapy shall be improved for the benefit of the European patient.
To exploit the superb spatial and temporal resolution of MRI in Molecular Imaging applications, it is necessary to improve the sensitivity and specificity of the currently available probes:
- Sensitivity. A new high relaxivity tetrameric Gd-based agent has been shown to provide an impressive seven-fold sensitivity enhancement in respect to the commercial agents maintaining an analogous safety profile.
- Specificity. An enzyme responsive Gd probe has been synthesized and tested. It reports about the citivity of beta-galactosidase, an enzyme largely used by biologists as reporter of gene expression.

A peek into the future of cell imaging
Mons/BE, May 18-19, 2010
After last year's great success of the 1st edition, the European Network for Cell Imaging and Tracking Expertise (ENCITE) and the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR), joint organisers, were very proud to present the 2nd ENCITE Educational Workshop. The University of Mons/Belgium, ENCITE project partner, hosted the event, which took place on May 18-19. 2010.
The project partners came another step closer to achieving their goals and presented their scientific highlights to a huge audience of more than 100 participants from 16 different countries. Based on initial findings and more recent advances in their research, 28 leading experts throughout Europe and Israel presented remarkable insights into new methods of cell imaging.
